More Women are Stepping Up Against EMU

In March 2021, eleven women filed a lawsuit alleging that they were sexually assaulted while at EMU. Sadly, per the filing, EMU ignored or minimized their previous reports of assault. As a result, the perpetrators have walked free for years without consequences for their actions while EMU turned a blind eye.

We say: No. More.

We do not think this was an isolated incident. We believe more survivors are still out there. It’s time to come forward and tell Eastern Michigan University that this is NOT okay.

We want to help you fight back against the university for allegedly covering up what happened. Together, we can help expose this outrageous behavior and help protect other women from being assaulted.

University Officials Failed Assault Survivors

The lawsuit filing alleges that while campus police knew about systemic sexual assaults at EMU, they deliberately did not file reports from survivors.

The lawsuit specifically alleges:

  • Former Title IX coordinator Melody Werner of telling a survivor that it was,“not even worth reporting” her assault.
  • EMU retaliated against at least two survivors by holding up their transcripts as “pending litigation” until the year 2099.
  • Current EMU Police Chief Bob Heighes received knowledge of an assault from a family member in a fraternity.
  • An EMU police officer telling a student “nothing would happen” with prosecution because she reported an assault two months after it occurred.

Additionally, the lawsuit claims that EMU officials ignored or were indifferent to more than 30 instances of rape on or near the campus between 2015 and 2020. Many of the alleged rapes occurred at fraternity houses.

While we know a lawsuit can’t change what happened, it can help you expose a larger potential cover-up and help protect other women.

We’ve Fought This Fight Before, And We Aren’t Done Yet

✓ A Case for Women has been on the forefront of helping women seek justice for sexual assault when the assaults were part of a systemic cover-up by a larger institution.

✓ We were honored to work with some of the key attorneys in the litigation against Dr. Larry Nassar at Michigan State University. In the litigation, hundreds of women came forward to expose a decades-long sexual assault cover-up by the university related to USA Gymnastics.

✓ We are still working with key law firms in the space to take on human trafficking, sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, abuse in Boys Scouts and other institutions.

✓ We’re the only women-owned organization in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to trying to help women get the justice and monetary compensation they deserve through contingency-fee civil legal action. Our role is to provide you with a safe place for dialogue and information and to help facilitate communication between you and your law firm. We’re here for you.

✓ The law firms we work with handle sexual assault cases on a contingency basis! That means you pay nothing at all up front for the attorneys to represent you and if the case is not successful, then the law firm absorbs all of the costs and you pay nothing. If the case is successful, then the law firm retains a % of the total settlement value. This is all spelled out in your agreement.
