If the FDA Never Approved Mesh for Breast Use, Why Was It Used on Me?

Good question. The mesh used in breast surgeries was originally designed to repair hernias,1 not that it was failsafe for that either.2 Labeling it breast mesh was just calling it a rose by another name and using it in a way the FDA never approved of.3

If you developed complications following breast surgery in which breast mesh was used, you may have legal options.

The unfortunate fact that women are being hurt after having an “internal bra” implanted is coming under sharp scrutiny and into civil courts in the breast mesh lawsuit.4

We’re changing the narrative about lawsuits.

“In late 2023, the FDA issued a rare direct warning to practitioners, clarifying that no surgical mesh product, synthetic or biologic, should be used for breast augmentation, reconstruction or lifting.”6

What Is Breast Mesh and Why Is It Called The “Internal Bra?”

So-called breast mesh is produced in thin contoured micro sheets made of various materials, designed to suit natural breast shape and, ideally, blend with natural breast tissue. The products were touted as a breakthrough tool that would scaffold breast tissue, i.e., hold it in place to support breast reconstruction after mastectomy + cosmetic augmentation or other enhancement.7

Again, it makes no difference why breast mesh was used: 1/ out of necessity – reconstruction after a mastectomy; or 2/ for cosmetic reasons – after implants or a lift. No, please don’t feel embarrassed!5

Nutshell: Breast mesh has been falsely peddled as a surgical tool to improve long-term outcomes in cosmetic breast surgeries by preventing ptosis (pronounced TOE-SUS), meaning it would serve as girding that ideally combined with existing tissue to prevent drooping or bottoming out, therefore being dubbed the “internal bra” or “built-in bra.” Memorable ads show a woman’s hand cutting her bra in two with scissors.8

Was Breast Mesh Ever FDA Approved?

No, not for breasts. And this is the heart of the internal bra lawsuit. In November 2023, the FDA told healthcare providers straight-up: No surgical mesh product was cleared or approved for use in breast surgery, including augmentation or reconstruction.”

As for the NIH’s (National Institutes of Health) view of breast mesh: “There have been concerns regarding complications as a result of [breast] mesh placement and a lack of quantitative data regarding postoperative cosmetic outcomes.”10

No matter what it’s made of, though, or how it’s used on your breasts, breast mesh is still just hernia mesh used off label without an FDA greenlight for breasts, all so that Big Pharma could sell more products and reap more profits, padded by consumers. No pun intended.

Understanding the risks is crucial for anyone considering breast mesh placement because of the potential risk of serious complications that could dramatically impact a patient’s quality of life. Do be prepared to ask your MD if breast mesh use is planned for your upcoming surgery, since many women are not informed or, if they are, not about the specific product.

What Does the Science Say?

JPRAS (Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery) reported in June 2025 on extensive research concluding there is not hard evidence that using breast mesh even improves the outcomes of cosmetic breast surgery. On the contrary, using it can raise the risk of serious health consequences.12

And a 2021 clinical review found that more than one-third of mesh recipients have experienced complications, such as delayed healing, fluid build-up, capsular contraction from tightening scar tissue, and tissue death common within the first six months.

At least 10% of patients have suffered post-op infections and about 13% have required the implants to be removed.13

Here are some of the most common complications experienced by roughly one-third of women:11, 12

  • persistent pain
  • infection
  • mesh migration
  • wound breakdown
  • hemorrhage
  • adhesions
  • hematoma
  • mesh extrusion
  • scar encapsulation causing disfigurement

How Do I Know If I’m Having Problems From My Breast Mesh?

You could start feeling pain from immune or inflammatory reactions or tissue breakdown, infections requiring explant surgery, implant displacement, reconstruction failure, nerve injury, mesh erosion/ extrusion, even cancer.13

Note: Many complications require revision surgery and can cause permanent deformity.

Which Breast Mesh Products Are Named in the Lawsuit?

Some of the central defendants include:

  • GalaFLEX
  • Phasix
  • AlloMax
  • FlexHD
  • Strattice
  • Other ADM (acellular dermal matrix) scaffolds

“The FDA also announced that GalaFLEX maker Becton, Dickinson & Co. updated its warnings and precautions to reflect complications and off-label mesh use concerns.”

P.S. GalaFLEX and Phasix are made by Becton Dickinson (BD), the same corporate family behind pelvic mesh products that recently resulted in major litigation. Worse, women often don’t know that mesh was used or which mesh product, per their operative reports.

Even if you don’t know whether or not your body was exposed to one of these products, you can still talk to our team about an internal bra lawsuit.

Can I File a Breast Mesh Lawsuit,
and Do I Need a Breast Mesh Lawyer?

You could qualify for a breast mesh lawsuit if you had internal bra surgery where the surgeon used breast mesh and you suffered serious complications as a result, such as infection, mesh erosion, or severe pain requiring surgery or revision surgery.

Women in the breast mesh lawsuit are alleging that manufacturers promoted off-label use of mesh for breasts, failing to study the mesh for use with breast tissue and failing to warn surgeons and patients that complications could ensue.

We work with proven breast mesh lawyers specializing in this specific case area.

WE WEAR THIS BADGE PROUDLY. Because, in a time when legal services are still dominated by men, only a Women Owned Business can bring the woman’s perspective to issues that disproportionately affect women.

We are the ones, far more than men, who are injured by sexual assault, financial scams, the gender pay gap, toxic chemicals, and the misguided practices of powerful pharmaceutical companies.
