Flight Attendants and Pilots Face Alleged Elevated Cancer Risk From Cosmic Radiation, New Study Finds

If you or someone you love has spent a career in the sky, a new study on flight attendant and pilot cancer risk may be worth your attention. Flight attendants and pilots reportedly die of radiation-related cancers at higher rates than workers in over 500 other occupations, according to new research, and the workers most affected are reportedly the ones with the least legal protection from it. We wanted to break down what’s actually being reported, what it might mean for the flight attendants and pilots who make up a huge share of this workforce, and why we’re keeping a close eye on this story.

What’s Going On

A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, and covered by TIME, examined more than 12.7 million U.S. deaths between 2020 and 2024 across 503 occupations. Researchers reportedly found that flight attendants and pilots had the highest and second highest share of deaths from radiation-related cancers of any profession studied, a proportion that allegedly exceeded even nuclear technologists, workers whose radiation exposure is federally regulated and monitored.

The theory behind the findings centers on cosmic radiation exposure. Commercial flights cruise at altitudes above 30,000 feet, where the atmosphere offers far less shielding from high-energy particles than we get at sea level. Air crew reportedly absorb more of this radiation, on average, than workers in any other job in the country, accumulating an estimated 3 to 6 millisieverts per year, year after year, over the course of a career.

According to the study’s authors, the pattern held up under scrutiny. The elevated risk appeared specifically in cancers already linked to radiation exposure, including breast, prostate, melanoma, and certain leukemias, and it did not appear in cancers unrelated to radiation, like colon cancer. Ground based aviation workers, such as mechanics who don’t fly, reportedly did not show the same elevated risk, which researchers say points toward time spent airborne, not aviation work generally, as the common thread.

Despite the FAA officially recognizing aircrew as “occupationally exposed” to radiation, U.S. pilots and flight attendants are currently subject to no federal dose limits and no requirement that their radiation exposure even be monitored. This stands in contrast to nuclear industry workers, and to air crew in Europe, who fall under formal exposure caps.

Why This Matters for Women

Flight attendants are a heavily female dominated workforce, and that matters here. Two of the cancer types allegedly linked to this elevated radiation exposure, breast cancer and melanoma, are cancers that disproportionately affect women. For a workforce that is majority women, spending decades absorbing more radiation than nearly any other job in America, without so much as a monitoring requirement, is a question worth asking.

It’s also worth noting what the researchers themselves are careful to say: this is not a reason for passengers to worry about their own flights. The radiation dose from occasional air travel is a small fraction of what career air crew accumulate. This is a story about the people working the aisle and the cockpit for a living, not about the people in the window seat.

Where We Stand

Right now, there’s no established legal claim tied to any individual flight attendant’s or pilot’s cancer diagnosis, and the study’s authors are careful to note that their data cannot measure any individual’s actual radiation dose or definitively prove that flying caused any specific person’s cancer. This is an association identified across a large population, not, at least not yet, proof of cause and effect for any one worker.

We are actively investigating this issue and will continue to follow it.
