RBG: What’s at Stake Now

This Supreme Court Appointee REALLY Matters– And Not Just Because of Women’s Rights

If you are awake today, you know that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died yesterday and that we are now in a fight like no other to decide who takes her place. But do you know why this issue is so important?

We urge you, Republican or Democrat, to consider what is at stake.

1/ Healthcare. If Trump appoints the next judge, then it is likely that The Affordable Care Act will be repealed, and 20 million Americans will lose healthcare coverage during a pandemic.

2/ Environmental Safety. Right now the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has the power to issue binding regulations instructing energy companies on which systems they must use to limit emissions. A more conservative Court will likely strike down the regulations favored by Democrats, furthering risks to our children and grandchildren from climate change and also environmental disasters such as the BP oil spill and the Flint water crisis.

3/ Democracy. We aren’t kidding. Our democracy is based on the ability of people to freely vote. But the current Court’s Republican majority has already been a disaster for democracy, handing down several significant orders limiting voting rights in a pandemic and dismantling much of the Voting Rights Act. It’s also nixed many of the nation’s campaign finance laws while permitting laws that do nothing but enable voter suppression.

4/ LGBTQ Rights. The Court’s constitutional decisions protecting LGBTQ rights stand on precarious ground now and could be thrown out the window in a more conservative Court, paving the way for States to discriminate, especially against same-sex couples.

5/ The Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Communications Commission, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other independent agencies would be in trouble and potentially move from independence to under the president’s thumb – a move that castrates the very core of America’s democracy.

6/ Reproductive Rights. There is no question. Women would no longer have the freedom to control their own bodies. Men would.

7/ Truth. Commercial advertising could be given the same kind of protection given to political dissent as it would most likely no longer have to adhere to Federal Trade Commission regulations regarding false and misleading advertisements. This means that corporations could say what they want regardless of the veracity of the statements. Just imagine: your medications and food could be legally falsely labeled and you would have no way of knowing.

The stakes are astronomical.
